32.4

The average number of pizzas eaten by the average American per year?

How many more months left in the Bush administration?

My age?

Nope. That's John Smotlz's ERA after today's opening game. To put it into perpective for you non-baseball folks, that means that if he pitched an entire game like he did for the 1 2/3 innings he was on the mound today, the opposing team would score 32 runs. The record for most runs scored in nine innings (in the modern era) is 29. Ah well, it was better than work.

And there are still 161 games left.

At least his ERA is less than Braden Looper's. After he blew Pedro's first win with the Mets, isn't he sitting there with an ERA of infinity?

You know Smoltz isn't going to be this bad again. The real concern should be the offense. Yeah, Beckett's a great pitcher and all, but getting shut out like that, yeesh.

Actually, the offense looked decent early. Furcal and Giles started the game with two straight walks. Chipper hit a great shot to right that should have moved up the runners, but Furcal slipped and had to stay at 2nd. Andrew hit into a FC which would have scored Furcal had he been at 3rd, then Laroche struck out. I was feeling pretty good after the first 1/2 inning - sure, we should have scored one, but it was a good start and Beckett was up to 25-28 pitches (plus lots of throws to 1st to keep runners in check). After the bottom, though.... ick.

I know Smoltz will pick it up. IIRC he had a really bad outing early last year which popped his ERA up in the double digits. He had it whittled down to 2.76 by the end of the season. You know what though? I'll give up the first game if we end up winning 100. Last year the Mutts smacked us around 7-2 on opening day. Year before? Expos won 10-2. In fact, I heard Pete Van Weiren say yesterday that the Braves' franchise opening day record was 16-23 (now 16-24). Go figure.
